In terms of appearance and structure, industrial cameras are compact and strong, not easily damaged, and can work continuously in poor environments; while ordinary cameras usually have beautiful appearances and good portability, but cannot work continuously for 24 hours or more.

Taking into account the particularity of the subject, the exposure time of industrial cameras is short, so that it can capture high-speed moving objects. For example, if you stick a business card on the blades of an electric fan, rotate it at maximum speed, set the appropriate shutter time, and capture an image with an industrial camera, you can still clearly identify the fonts on the business card. For ordinary cameras that can only take 2-3 images per second, this is obviously impossible to do.

In terms of the scanning method of the image sensor, industrial cameras scan progressively, while ordinary cameras often scan interlaced, or even scan every three lines. The reason for this difference is that progressive scan image sensors are more difficult to produce, have low yields, small shipments, and are expensive. Its advantage is that it can clearly capture fast-moving objects, but this is not an urgent need for ordinary cameras. Therefore, for ordinary cameras that pursue economic benefits, interlaced scan image sensors may be the best choice.

In terms of the quality of the output image, industrial cameras output naked data with a wide spectral range, which is suitable for high-quality image processing algorithms; ordinary cameras are limited by data storage space and often compress images, and the spectral range is only suitable for human vision.

Industrial cameras can work for a long time, such as working 24 hours a day for 6 months, but civilian cameras cannot. Industrial cameras can work in harsh environments, such as colder temperatures. Ordinary digital cameras cannot do this, and industrial cameras are more expensive than ordinary cameras.

The difference between ordinary cameras and industrial cameras for machine vision is, in short: an ordinary camera is a highly integrated micro machine vision system; while an industrial camera is one of the components of the machine vision system.

In addition to the above points, there are also significant differences between industrial cameras and ordinary cameras in terms of data interface, photosensitive band, lens components, triggering methods and parameter settings. Although there are significant differences between the two, it does not mean that the former is better than the latter. The key lies in the application environment. As the saying says, there are specialties in the art industry. For daily shooting of landscapes and people, and the pursuit of some special light and shadow effects, ordinary SLR cameras are definitely the best choice. However, for the application requirements of industrial visual inspection, only professional and reliable industrial cameras can meet the requirements.
