LED Light Sources in Machine Vision Systems and Optimization

The most commonly used LED light source during the operation of machine vision systems in industrial cameras has the advantages of long service life, strong light source brightness and low power consumption. According to different illumination methods, the most common types of LED light sources are coaxial light sources, strip light sources and zero-angle light sources. These three types of light sources have their own characteristics and are therefore suitable for different application fields.

Coaxial Light Source

The coaxial light source is cleverly designed, and its biggest feature is its high uniformity, which solves the problem of reflection during the imaging process. Therefore, it is very suitable as a light source for highly reflective metal surfaces and glass, especially in the mirror processing industry. It plays an irreplaceable role. During the configuration process, special attention needs to be paid to adjusting the positions of the convex lens and transflective glass.

Strip Light Source

Strip light sources are the most flexible and can collect images from multiple angles to obtain a full range of image information. For objects that require comprehensive surface characteristics, such as detecting whether the object being measured is shiny or has surface texture, strip light sources are usually the best choice.

Zero-Angle Light Source

The biggest feature of the zero-angle light source is that the edge contour of the object is displayed very clearly, which is especially suitable for inspecting the damage of metal edges. However, it should be noted that this low-angle lighting has relatively high heat dissipation requirements for the light source.

Light Source Imaging Optimization Solution

The entire machine vision system consists of several parts such as light source, industrial camera, and image processing software. Each component has a decisive impact on the quality of the final imaging. For the light source, optimization can be done mainly from two aspects: color and filter, to increase the possibility of high-quality imaging of the system.

Filter

Eliminating unnecessary data and noise can speed up the processing of useful information, and filters are a simple technique that limits the light entering the camera. Common filters include polarizers, wave-pass mirrors and blocking mirrors. They function like filters, filtering out signals that meet certain conditions.

Color

Since the object itself does not emit light when imaging a target object, the object signal that the camera can capture mainly depends on the object's emission of the light source. If you illuminate the opposite color with one color, it will appear black; if you illuminate other colors, the brightness of the object will increase in sequence; and if you illuminate the same color, you can get the maximum brightness.

Therefore, the choice of light source color directly affects the contrast of the image and the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the image collection process of machine vision technology.
