What is an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

An image signal processor (ISP) is a specialized processor that receives raw, unprocessed data from an image sensor and transforms it into a usable image.

A camera sensor is essentially a grid of light-sensitive pixels. Each pixel measures the intensity of light shining on it—but it doesn't know the color of the light, the overall brightness of the scene, or whether the lens has introduced distortion. The sensor outputs a string of raw numbers. This unprocessed data is entirely different from a photograph.

An ISP bridges this gap. It applies a series of carefully crafted algorithms—color reconstruction, noise reduction, exposure correction, white balance, sharpening, and more—to generate the final image received by the application.

A useful analogy: the sensor is like the film that captures light; the ISP is like the darkroom that develops the film.

Without an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you only get raw data. With a good ISP—and good ISP network tuning—you get high-quality images.
